Under the standard rules, it stresses no wheel cleaning. Ok for the new guy, what does that mean?

For BASX racing, BSA wheels are all that are allowed? But you can run Awana wheels in Street Stock? Also, what is meant by the rule stating no fenders, aerodynamic modifications, weights etc not mounted in front or behind the wheel?

Lastly, if you are racing by proxy how to you handle if the car weighs in greater or less than 5.0 oz? Can you send trim weights, etc.?

Just want to understand how it all works. Thanks guys.

Box Stock is the cheapest to get started in, as you're running axles and wheels from the BSA kit. BASX Am (amateur) is the easiest build for beginners because you don't have to worry about fenders.

There are several places to get wheels and league axles. Several people cut wheels themselves but it requires a lathe.

If you attend a race in person, you may be tempted to clean your wheels between races to improve performance. This is a no-no, since it isn't fair to folks who aren't able to clean their wheels.

Correct, in BASX, the wheel has to be a BSA wheel, and can weigh no LESS [ Note: Duhrrr....thanks for the catch, Joel ] than 2.4 grams. In order to keep the builds simple, things like air dams, fenders and weights that sit inside of the wheels and block air are not allowed. You are limited to what you can do with the shape of the body, the alignment of the wheels and the prep on your wheels and axles. If you look at some photos (compare BASX to Street Stock) you should be able to easily see what the rules entail.

Street Stock opens the rules up more, so you can use wheels that aren't BSA, provided they conform to the rest of the specs. I believe that Pinecar wheels are popular as the raised wheel, since they have a smaller aerodynamic profile.

What I typically do is just get the car to about 4.95 oz and send it in. I don't think that .05oz is going to hurt me, and I haven't gotten dinged for being overweight.

That said, you can also use some tungsten putty for your trim weight...maybe about .10 ounces worth. Then, include a note in your box saying where on the car the putty is located, so that the race organizer can remove (if necessary) some putty from your car to bring it down to legal weight.

Vitamin K: you forgot the plug for Box Stock racing.

hammertimeracing: Box Stock cars are also limited to BSA wheels, but the builds are limited to a typical scout/AWANA build. Most notably, you can't modify the wheels, which eliminates the need for special tooling/skills or buying pro-turned wheels. However, fenders and more are completely kosher.
